What is it about carpet?
October 19, 2007
Litter training is still going on. I’m finding I’m having a bit of a hard time reminding my kids to make sure all the bedroom doors are closed. For some reason he will go poopie on the carpet. I’m not sure why. Is it because the bedrooms are situated away from his litter box. Out of sight, out of mind? Is it the feel of the carpet? Not sure but he’s done it three times. Once in my bedroom, once in my WIC, and once in my son’s room. All three times probably could have been avoided with better supervision. The first time I was doing sit ups and not watching him. The other times one on the kids “said” they would watch him but didn’t.
So, as long as the bedroom doors are shut he’s fine. But if the doors are open, you better be beside him. Hopefully with the constant praise and idiot dance when he uses the litter box will keep him more interested in going there.
I am a bit miffed at my family though. We decided as a family to get this puppy yet I feel like I am the only one putting any effort into this. I have never seen anyone else praise him for using his litter box. That is something I’ll be talking to them about tonight! Positive reinforcement! I’m not around all the time. He needs to be praised by others not just me!
Sorry about wandering off topic. Anyway, if anyone has any idea what it is about carpet please let me know.

I loved the ‘idiot dance’ comment. Positive reinforcement is key & we can all take it to an extreme. Unfortunately the 80/20 rule applies to dog rearing as well as in the rest of life. 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. So in a family of 5 most of the work falls on one person.
Perhaps you should try the idiot dance of positive reinforcement for your family when they reinforce the dog. Redirect your efforts & try to get some delegation working for you.

Thanks Jeff! I wish it was that easy with the kids. I’d be doing the idiot dance nonstop. Clean your room, idiot dance, do your home work, idiot dance, put your plate in the dishwasher, idiot dance, etc. LOL. Although just this morning the puppy had gone into my youngest son’s room when I see him being carried out and set into the litter box. My DS told me “he was acting funny” sure enough Bandit went potty in the litter box. Idiot dance for puppy and big hug and kisses with “thank you, you are such a big boy for helping mommy.” for the other!

By the way, we’re getting a black & white zuchon in a couple weeks. We can’t hardly wait. Thanks for the blog, it helps to get some unbiased comments that aren’t from a breeder.

Okay so we got Graham mid December & he’s 5 1/2 months old now. About a month ago the peeing in the house was out of control. His favorite spots were my daughters’ rooms, their play room & any door mat he could find. When he started lifting his leg to pee is when we got him fixed. We think things are better but you never know because he doesn’t do it in front of you in the first place. So for now he’s on room restriction with direct supervision if allowed in those areas. He’s a fun little guy. Black & white and about 10 or 11 lbs now. We got him at 2 lbs 6 oz. He gained about 1/2 lb a week. Hopefully he tops off where he is now.
Since it is so rainy here in Washington most of his exercise is in the house & it seems to be working out well. He gets a few burst of energy each day & runs around pretend growling. He gets a little more snuggly everyday but prefers to sleep in his kennel at night. He really enjoyed the snow.
